The Honourable Victor Oh was appointed to the Senate of Canada in January 2013 on the recommendation of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper and served until his retirement in June 2024. During his parliamentary career, he was a dedicated advocate for social inclusion, economic opportunity, multiculturalism and stronger international engagement.
Among his notable legislative contributions was his successful amendment to Bill C-6, adopted in 2017, which removed the age requirement for citizenship applications and enabled minors to apply for Canadian citizenship independently of a parent or guardian.
Senator Oh was also actively involved in parliamentary diplomacy and represented Canada in numerous international forums. His leadership roles and parliamentary responsibilities included:
- Leader of the Canadian Delegation to the 24th Annual Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum in 2016;
- Co-Chair of the Canada-China Legislative Association;
- Co-Chair of the Canada-Japan Inter-Parliamentary Group;
- Member of the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade;
- Member of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence;
- Member of the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry;
- Member of the Special Senate Committee on the Arctic; and
- Member of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
His international public service also included participating as an international election observer during Kazakhstan’s 2022 presidential election and Bangladesh’s 2024 parliamentary election.
Since retiring from the Senate, Senator Oh has remained actively engaged in public and community service. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Former Parliamentarians and continues to contribute his parliamentary, international and community experience to initiatives promoting civic participation, social cohesion and constructive international engagement.
